The Wicket - September Edition

Dear Club Leader and Volunteers,

It is always an exciting time for everyone who loves community cricket when a new season approaches. It is also a busy time getting everything ready before the first ball is bowled.

Never has the vital role of the grassroots volunteers seemed more important than in the past two years when the pandemic and, in some areas, devastating floods added to the hard work required to get cricket teams on the field.

The recently released Australian Cricket Census was testament to your amazing efforts with the number of registered participants at clubs increasing by 2% in the two seasons since the pandemic began. In the same period junior registered participation at clubs increased 4.5% while girls’ participation surged by 24.5%.

However, the closure of some Woolworths Blast Centres during registration periods contributed to a decline in the number of first-time participants entering our sport. Australian Cricket has taken up the challenge of ensuring we get more kids playing to keep all our clubs strong.

To do this, it is our role to arm you with the best possible participation programs, grant opportunities and digital aids to lessen your load and allow you to concentrate on your core roles and responsibilities.

Across the season we will continue to keep you updated about what we are doing to help you grow your club and the game.

All the best for the season.

James Allsopp,
Executive General Manager, Community Cricket & Capability
