Community umpires were invited to each of the men's and women's Test matches to participate in on-field walk during one of the session breaks.
A new initiative this year saw up to 20 community umpiring members given the opportunity to attend a Test match and participate in an on-field walk. Due to the nature of cricket, of the 6 Tests, only 3 groups were able to experience walking on the field - WA and VIC (Boxing Day and Women's Ashes Test). The Aussies wrapped up play too early at the Adelaide and Sydney Tests, while the weather interfered with the walk in Brisbane.
Thos who were lucky enough to participate took the opportunity to take some selfies on iconic stadiums, a place where some believe they will never get to step foot on. A couple of umpires were even lucky enough to be interviewed which was displayed on the big screen. A unique aspect was the ability for umpires to even interact with the crowd. There were plenty of high fives and waves as genuine appreciation was shared for those who provide a vital service to the game of cricket for all to enjoy.
While only a few groups received the full experience, this initiative to recognise community umpires was well received by each S&T and leads to building on this opportunity for season 2025/26.
