Xavier Doherty Makes BBL Match Referee Debut

Cricket Australia National Match Referee Panel member Xavier Doherty made his KFC Big Bash League (BBL) Match Refereeing debut in the match between the Hobart Hurricanes and Perth Scorchers.

Doherty is a former player playing for Australia at Under 19 and senior level across all three formats through his career. Doherty was part of the successful Australian Under 19 World Cup winning side back in 2002 in the tournament hosted by New Zealand.

Doherty represented Australia in four Test Matches, 60 One Day International and 11 T20 International matches through his career and was part of the 2015 World Cup winning squad when Australia won the ICC Cricket World Cup on home soil. Doherty also represented Australia at the 2012 ICC T20 World Cup played in Sri Lanka which made the Semi-Final.

Doherty’s domestic playing record featured 66 First-Class matches for his home state of Tasmania which included being part of the 2010-11 Sheffield Shield winning team. He also represented Tasmania on 106 occasions in the Domestic One Day competition which is eleventh on the list of most matches played. Doherty was also a winner of that competition three times.
In the BBL, Doherty played 34 matches for the Hobart Hurricanes (26 matches) and Melbourne Renegades (8 matches).

Coming into this season, Doherty was appointed to the Cricket Australia National Match Referee Panel for the first time and officiated in this season’s WBBL competition. In making his BBL Match Referee debut, Doherty becomes just the 18th Australian Match Referee and the 2nd from Tasmania to officiate in a BBL match.
