Cricket Australia (CA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Steve Davis as Umpire Selector and Lead Match Referee, further strengthening the organisation's commitment to developing and supporting world-class match officials across Australian cricket.
Widely respected throughout the global cricket community, Davis brings an unparalleled breadth of experience to the role, having excelled as an international umpire, match referee and now selector.
Across a distinguished umpiring career, Davis stood in 57 Test matches and a further 32 as TV Umpire, while also officiating in 137 One Day Internationals and 67 additional ODIs as TV Umpire. His international credentials include appointments at the 2007, 2011 and 2015 ICC Cricket World Cups.
In the T20 format, Davis officiated in 26 T20 Internationals and a further 21 matches as TV Umpire, including four ICC Men's T20 World Cups in 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2014. Domestically, he umpired 83 First-Class matches, including five Sheffield Shield Finals, establishing himself as one of Australia's most experienced and respected officials.
Davis has also built an extensive record as a Match Referee across two of the world's leading cricket nations. In Australia, he has overseen 20 Sheffield Shield matches, 17 One-Day Cup matches and 43 Big Bash League fixtures. His experience in England is equally significant, encompassing 62 County Championship matches, 27 List A contests and 75 domestic T20 matches, providing him with a unique perspective on officiating standards, development pathways and high-performance environments.
Cricket Australia Match Officials Manager Luke O'Brien said Davis's appointment represented a significant boost for the national Match Officials program, "Steve's experience within the game is second to none. Very few people in world cricket have contributed across officiating, match refereeing and talent identification at the level Steve has throughout his career. His knowledge of the game, understanding of elite performance environments and ability to mentor developing officials will be invaluable as we continue to strengthen our match officials pathway”.
Davis will continue to divide his time between the UK and Australia. He will officially commence in the role on Monday, August 3, before returning to Australia on September 18.
This role will mean that Davis will no longer Match Referee matches within Australia.
