Keeping your squad safe

Whether you have just turned 18 or 68, young cricketers look up to senior players as role models both on and off the field.  

When a young cricketer has been selected to train or play in your senior team it is important to remember that they are still learning and developing. Maintain a positive environment and be aware of the standards of behaviour in Australian Cricket’s Framework for Safeguarding Children and Young People apply.

Cricket is an exciting game that encourages leadership, friendship and teamwork, by providing positive guidance, role modelling positive behaviours and the Spirit of cricket we can support out young cricketers to develop and thrive in our sport.

Here are some best practice tips to ensure the safety and success of your squad:

  • Role Modelling Set a positive example for younger players by demonstrating good sportsmanship, respect, and professionalism both on and off the field.
  • Boundaries Maintain appropriate boundaries with younger players. Avoid any behaviour that could be perceived as favouritism or inappropriate.
  • Online Conduct Be mindful of your online conduct. Avoid engaging in private communication with younger players and always include a parent or guardian in any electronic communication.
  • Reporting Concerns Be aware of the reporting procedure for any concerns or complaints. Encourage players to speak up if they feel something isn’t quite right.
  • Acceptable Behaviour: Recognise that these young cricketers are still underage and adult-related content and behaviours are not appropriate. Be vigilant in monitoring their interactions and environments.
  • Environmental Factors Ensure that changerooms and social functions are safe and appropriate for young athletes. Provide separate facilities or schedules if necessary.
